Established in 1995, the Schengen Visa was a game changer for non-EU citizens hoping to explore some of the continent’s most famous destinations. It allows non-EU travelers to make a short, temporary visit to 29 European countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
However, this easy access to Europe raises a big question: where will you visit first? With so many fantastic places to visit, deciding where to visit first is challenging. Luckily, we’re here to help. In this article, we’ve listed 12 countries you can visit with a Schengen Visa. We selected these entries because they offer many things to see and do.
Greece
We’ll start this list with one of our favorite European countries: Greece. This beautiful nation is famed for its fascinating history, rich culture, picturesque islands, and wall-to-wall sunshine. Loved by beachgoers, history buffs, and partygoers, Greece offers endless things to see and do year-round.
However, you’ll likely want to visit in summer, when temperatures consistently hit 86°F (30°C). The capital, Athens, has iconic landmarks such as the Acropolis and the Parthenon. Meanwhile, Greek islands like Rhodes and Corfu are home to medieval Old Towns and fortresses. Crete and Kefalonia offer glorious white sand beaches if you’d prefer to soak up the sun. Alternatively, party hard in Mykonos and Zante.
Belgium
Much loved for its medieval cities, beautiful architecture, and world-class chocolate, Belgium is another popular place you can visit on a Schengen Visa. Belgium is only a small country, but it packs a punch with many things to see and do. The capital city, Brussels, is a brilliant starting point. You can visit famous attractions like the Grand Palace, Manneken Pis, and Atomium here.
Travelers seeking a more laid-back atmosphere should head to Bruge, a charming city with picturesque canals and well-preserved medieval architecture. There’s also Ghent, a somewhat hidden gem destination home to a breathtaking castle and cathedral. During your time in Belgium, don’t forget to try Belgian beer. Leffe, Trappist, and Duvel are my favorites.
Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a Balkan country in Eastern Europe. It’s best known for its diverse landscapes, seaside resorts, and affordability. Therefore, it’s an excellent place to visit in the summer if you’re looking for somewhere that gives you more bang for your buck. According to Budget Your Trip, Bulgaria’s average daily travel cost is only $69.
Sunny Beach is the most obvious place to visit in Bulgaria for sun, sea, and sand. This lively resort town is renowned for its stunning beaches, budget-friendly resorts, and vibrant nightlife. You’ll spend time sunbathing on Central Beach, swimming in the sea, partying on Flower Street, and having fun at Sunny Beach Amusement Park. Other noteworthy places in Bulgaria include Sofia, Varna, and Burgas.
Denmark
Travelers searching for a little bit of everything can’t go wrong with Denmark. This friendly nation is known for many things, including Lego, the Vikings, vibrant architecture, and delicious cuisine. I recommend starting your Denmark adventure in Copenhagen, the country’s lively capital. You’ll find world-famous sights and unique attractions here, such as Freetown Christiania and Nyhavn.
Not to mention, the Copenhagen food scene is a delight, especially at the Reffen street food market. Meanwhile, Billund, the home of Lego, is a big hit with families, and Aarhus is the perfect place for a romantic getaway. Better yet, Denmark’s scenic landscape is home to countless hiking trails, ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. We highly recommend taking on the impressive Archipelago Trail.

Whether you’re planning a romantic city break, a small-town getaway, or a beach vacation for the whole family, Portugal has what you’re looking for. One of Southern Europe’s most popular tourist destinations, Portugal is loved for its historic cities, medieval Old Towns, picturesque landscapes, and beautiful cuisine.
If it’s a city break you’re after, head to Lisbon and Porto. Both these places offer stunning architecture, authentic cuisine, and entertaining activities. Alternatively, get lost in fairytale towns like Sintra, where you’ll find mesmerizing landmarks that belong in a Disney film. Fancying a beach vacation instead? Look no further than the Algarve or Madeira, home to Portugal’s best beaches.
Iceland
While Iceland has much to offer every kind of traveler, it best suits outdoor adventurers. Famous worldwide for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, hot springs, and glaciers, Iceland is the go-to destination to explore the great outdoors, discover geological wonders, and participate in unique activities. You’ll start your adventure in Reykjavik.
Here, you’ll find iconic landmarks like Hallgrimskirkja, restaurants serving authentic cuisines, and lively streets with bars and nightclubs. From Reykjavik, drive along the Iceland Ring Road and visit the island’s main attractions. Significant points of interest include Thingvellir National Park, Jökulsárlón, Gullfoss Falls, and Seljalandsfoss. However, our personal favorite is the Silfra fissure, where you can dive between two continents.
Norway
Another Scandinavian country that makes our list is Norway, best known for its gorgeous landscape, vibrant architecture, and exciting cities. In Oslo, the capital city, you’ll find many things to see and do and accommodation that suits every budget. We’ve been to Oslo multiple times, and it never fails to disappoint.
History lovers can get lost discovering Norway’s rich history in places like the Fram Museum and the Akershus Fortress. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike, sail, and swim in the Oslo Fjord, and big foodies can eat local food until their bellies are full at Oslo Street Food Market. The Lofoten Archipelago is another popular place to visit in Norway. This region is famous for its beautiful islands, colorful houses, scenic hiking trails, and Scandinavian wildlife.
Croatia
Travelers seeking the best of both worlds should visit Croatia. Croatia is a beautiful country with a fantastic balance of big city life and breathtaking coastline. As a result, it offers tourists a vast range of exciting things to see and do. When you’re not soaking up the sun along the Adriatic Coast, you’ll discover ancient cities like Dubrovnik.
For the best city break, head to Zagreb, the capital. The city has iconic Croatian attractions like the Croatian National Theater, Zagreb Cathedral, and St. Mark’s Church. Hvar and Split are ideal for a city break that offers golden-sand beaches. Meanwhile, Dubrovnik is a popular place to visit if you love history and Game of Thrones.
Czech Republic
The next Schengen Visa destination on our list is the Czech Republic, a fairytale country loved most for its medieval architecture, stunning natural scenery, and storybook castles. Its capital, Prague, is one of Europe’s most visited cities, so you might want to start your trip there.
You’ll likely spend most of your time exploring the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, visiting Prague Castle, and indulging in local cuisine. We highly recommend trying kolache, a sweet fruit-filled pastry. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital, visit the medieval city of Český Krumlov. Brimming with historic architecture, this small city sits alongside the Vltava River. Other notable destinations in the Czech Republic include Brno, Pilsen, and Karlovy Vary.

One of the most famous European countries you can visit on a Schengen Visa is Italy. Italy is a hugely renowned tourist destination that is appreciated for its rich history, world-class cuisine, and iconic architecture. Having said that, Paris is the most obvious choice. Paris, the French capital, is home to many of Europe’s most iconic attractions, including the Eiffel Tower, the Mona Lisa, and the Notre Dame Cathedral. The Parisian streets are also a great place to experience authentic French cuisine and lifestyle. Away from Paris, you’ll want to visit seaside destinations like Nice and Menton, ski in the French Alps, and discover royal palaces in Versailles.
Estonia
One of the Schengen area’s least traveled destinations is Estonia, a massively underrated European nation with much to offer every kind of traveler. However, the country is best known for its medieval charm and postcard-perfect natural scenery. You’ll likely fly into Tallinn, the nation’s capital, when visiting Estonia.
