Big 4 unveils game-changing international student visa reforms

Foreign Education, New visa rules, international students, universities, H-1B employees

In recent years, changes in visa regulations have reshaped the landscape for international students seeking education abroad. Across various countries, from the United States to Australia, governments have implemented amendments aimed at balancing national security concerns with the facilitation of global talent exchange. Let’s take a closer look at the specific changes made in each country to better understand their impact on prospective international students.

In response to growing concerns about visa abuse, the US has implemented various changes affecting visa categories like H-1B, EB-5, and student visas (F, M, J). These modifications include pilot programs for visa renewals and stricter registration requirements for visa lotteries. As of now, H-1B employees can renew their visas without leaving the country, but their spouses are not eligible for this process.

United Kingdom

The UK has introduced new rules impacting international students, such as restrictions on bringing dependents and family members for postgraduate research programs. Despite these changes, the UK remains an attractive destination for its renowned universities and research opportunities. Notably, postgraduate programs in the UK typically last around a year, minimizing the impact of this change on Indian students’ educational experiences.

Canada

Canada has implemented changes to its visa policies, including revisions to the post-graduation work permit program and updates to the Express Entry system for skilled immigrants. Additionally, all international students in Canada are now required to show they have at least $20,635 for their living expenses (excluding students moving to Quebec). This requirement is essential for Indian students planning to study in Canada.

European Union

The EU has introduced a “cascade system” simplifying the process of obtaining multi-entry Schengen visas for Indian nationals. Under this system, students with a positive travel history can obtain visas with extended validity periods. However, it’s important to note that Schengen visas are for short stays, with a maximum permitted stay of 90 days within any 180-day period. Meeting financial requirements is crucial for visa approval.

Australia

Similarly, Australia has hiked the savings mandate for international students. As per the new rules, international students must show savings of at least $24,505, a 17% hike from the previous levels. It is important to note that both Australia and Canada have stringent financial requirements for international students, emphasizing the need for thorough financial planning.
