Canada Calling: Trudeau govt to welcome 500,000 new immigrants every year despite growing opposition

Dr Jagdeep Singh Bachher, a distinguished finance expert of Punjabi origin, has been appointed as the chancellor of the University of Waterloo.

Despite declining public support for immigration in Canada owing to rising unaffordability, the federal government has decided to maintain its current record levels. This means approximately 500,000 new permanent residents will be welcomed each year.

Justin Trudeau’s government faced pressure to reduce this target, as surveys indicated a growing number of Canadians believe there is excessive immigration. However, Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced during a recent press conference that the government would not alter its course. He explained that stabilising immigration at current levels is vital for successful integration and ensuring sustainable population growth.

A survey conducted by the Environics Institute revealed that 44 percent of Canadians consider immigration to be “too much,” while 51 percent disagree. This marks a significant shift from the previous year when only 27 percent held this view, with a record high of 69 percent in disagreement. Minister Miller emphasised that stabilising immigration levels would enable the government to address labor shortages, particularly in the construction industry, and meet the housing and healthcare needs of newcomers.
