GCC Considering Single Visa System for Residents

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is contemplating a unified visa system, easing travel between its member states. Learn about this significant proposal and its potential implications for tourism and convenience.

GCC Single Visa

In a significant development, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), consisting of six member states, is contemplating the implementation of a unified visa system. This initiative aims to enable residents of GCC nations to travel seamlessly within the member states.

The announcement came from Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE Minister of Economy, who indicated that the new visa regime could be introduced in the near future.

Simplifying Travel within GCC

As it stands, only citizens of GCC countries currently enjoy the privilege of visa-free travel within the member states, which includes;

  1. the United Arab Emirates
  2. Saudi Arabia
  3. Bahrain
  4. Kuwait
  5. Oman, and
  6. Qatar.

However, expatriates residing in these nations must navigate a complex process of applying for individual visas when visiting other member states. Some nationalities are fortunate enough to benefit from visa-free or visa-on-arrival arrangements.

Speaking at the Future Hospitality Summit in Abu Dhabi, Minister Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri addressed the concept of a unified visa for the GCC, highlighting its potential to streamline travel for residents within the GCC.

GCC’s Schengen-Style Visa

This move towards a unified visa system aligns with recent discussions within the GCC about implementing a “Schengen-style” visa.

Earlier this year, Bahrain’s tourism minister, Fatima Al Sairafi, disclosed plans to establish such a visa system for tourists, making it easier for them to explore multiple GCC countries without the constraints of individual visas.

During the Arabian Travel Market, Minister Fatima Al Sairafi mentioned that ministerial-level discussions were actively underway to bring the unified visa system to fruition. She expressed optimism that this system would be launched in the very near future.

Additionally, an official from the UAE Ministry of Economy, speaking at the same panel, emphasized how the unified visa system would facilitate tourism by allowing travellers to visit multiple countries within the GCC under a single, hassle-free package.

Conclusion

The GCC’s initiative to consider a single visa system demonstrates its commitment to fostering closer ties and greater convenience among member states. This development is set to transform travel within the GCC and open up new opportunities for tourism and economic cooperation. Stay tuned for further updates on the progress of this groundbreaking proposal.
