Germany Issued Over 393,000 National Visas Last Year

The German authorities have revealed that the country’s visa offices of the missions abroad processed a total of 1,490,473 visa applications in 2022, with a large part of them being national visas.

According to data provided by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, in 2022, the country issued a total of 393,083 national visas.

Such a number represents a significant increase compared to 2021, when the country issued 304,773 national visas, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

In addition to sharing the number of national visas issued in 2022, the German authorities disclosed that during the same year, they processed a total of 444,154 applications for national visas.

The same stressed that the number of processed applications in 2022 increased by 27 per cent compared to 2021. Moreover, the number of processed applications for national visas exceeded for the first time the number of processed visas during the pre-pandemic period.

“In 2022, the number of national visas issued amounted to 393,083 (2021: 304,773). A total of 444,154 applications for national visas were processed. In 2022, the number of processed applications not only increased again by another 27 per cent compared to the previous year; the pre-pandemic level was also exceeded for the first time by almost 60,000 applications (+15.42 per cent)” the statement of the Federal Foreign Office reads.

As data provided by the Federal Foreign Office shows, the highest number of national visas in 2022 was issued for employment purposes.

Germany issued a total of 152,336 national work visas to foreigners entering the country for work purposes in 2022.

Of all nationalities, data show that Indians, Turks, Serbians, Bosnians, Kosovars, Russians, and Albanians were issued the highest number of national work visas in 2022. The numbers of national work visas issued to these nationals are as follows:

  • India – 17,379
  • Türkiye – 12,542
  • Serbia – 11,792
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina – 10,524
  • Kosovo – 9,309
  • Russia Federation – 6,975
  • Albania – 6,526

The second-highest number of national visas was issued for spouse reunification in 2022. Data shows that Germany issued a total of 71,129 national visas for spouse reunification last year, with the highest number being granted to nationals of India, Türkiye, Lebanon, Russia, Kosovo, and Iran:

  • India – 8,930
  • Türkiye – 8,778
  • Lebanon – 5,008
  • Russia – 4,981
  • Kosovo – 4,643
  • Iran – 4,161

In addition to the above mentioned, it was disclosed that the third highest number of national visas was issued for study purposes in 2022.

Data show that Germany issued a total of 71,018 national study visas last year. The highest number of this type of visa was issued to nationals of India (17,268), Türkiye (7,176), and China (7,077).

As for the other purposes, data show that in 2022, Germany issued a total of 40,422 national visas for child reunification and 26,903 national visas for humanitarian purposes, among others.
