Canada is a popular study-abroad destination for Indian students. Concerns over their educational journey have been raised by recent news reports about tensions escalating between Canada and India. Financial Express Online reached out to a few well-known figures in the field of education abroad to obtain their opinions on the ongoing hostilities between India and Canada and the implications for Indian students studying there. Excerpts:

Each year, the number of students pursuing education abroad continues to soar. According to data released by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, there are currently more than 1,300,000 Indian students enrolled in 79 different countries.

Remarkably, over 180,000 of them have chosen Canada as their destination, cementing its position as the second most preferred country, only behind the United States. This preference for Canada has outstripped traditional favourites like the UK, Australia, UAE, New Zealand, and others.

Drawing from our extensive experience in the education industry spanning over 16 years, we’ve witnessed a remarkable surge in the number of students opting for Canada. In recent times, we’ve seen a substantial increase in student applications from our recruitment partners globally aspiring to pursue their education in Canada.

Several compelling factors contribute to this trend of choosing Canada as an educational destination. Foremost, Canada’s highly ranked universities and exceptional quality of life have a magnetic pull for Indian students. Beyond that, the country offers abundant job opportunities with a consistent demand for skilled labour, making it an ideal choice for students looking to kickstart their careers.

Canada also boasts a thriving economy, securing its position as the 11th wealthiest in the world. The reasons for selecting Canada as an education destination are truly boundless, encompassing opportunities and advantages for students.

Canadian universities have earned a well-deserved reputation for providing high-quality education to international students. This is the primary motivation for Indian students to choose Canada as their destination.

While there may be growing tensions between India and Canada, the impact of these issues on Indian students studying in Canada remains minimal. Up to this point, there have been no reported issues from students studying in the country.

Since the process from our side doesn’t conclude once students are enrolled in their chosen universities. Our recruitment partners maintain constant communication with their students even after their admission. The students we are currently in contact with are leading comfortable lives within the country, unaffected by any external disruptions. We work closely with universities from different countries to ensure that students have a smooth transit from their home country to their destination abroad.

There is an ongoing and steady increase in the number of international students, and recent challenges are unlikely to disrupt this trend. When Indian students decide to study in Canada, they carefully evaluate a multitude of factors that encourage them to stay in Canada for longer durations. They often have personal connections, like relatives and friends already settled in Canada, influencing their choice and ensuring safety. Furthermore, the Canadian government’s consistent efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of international students are expected to continue, reducing such incidents in the near future.

The significance of reducing these issues cannot be overstated for Canada, given that approximately 25% of its economy depends on contributions from international students. A notable decline in international student numbers would have a substantial impact on Canada’s economy. Therefore, it is likely that the Canadian government will remain proactive in attracting and retaining international students by prioritising their safety.

Canada is highly popular among Indian students planning to study abroad. It has gained significant traction in recent years due to several factors.

Canada offers world-class education institutions, a welcoming multicultural society, and attractive post-graduation work opportunities. Additionally, Canada’s immigration policies, such as the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) and the Express Entry system, make it an appealing destination for Indian students looking to pursue both education and long-term career prospects.

This popularity is reflected in the increasing number of Indian students choosing Canada as their study destination, making it one of the top choices among Western countries.

The deteriorating diplomatic ties between Canada and India could potentially impact the interest of Indian students in studying in Canada. Concerns about visa prospects and a less welcoming atmosphere may lead some students to reconsider their options.

However, Canada’s well-established reputation for high-quality education and favorable immigration policies, such as the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP), might still outweigh these concerns for many. It’s possible that some students may explore alternative destinations, but Canada’s attractiveness as a study destination may continue to draw Indian students, especially if diplomatic tensions improve over time, or if Canada actively works to reassure prospective students of its commitment to their education and well-being.

As a thought leader in the study abroad sector, it’s worth highlighting the longstanding relationship between India and Canada in attracting Indian students. While recent incidents may raise concerns, it’s essential for students to adopt a patient and informed approach.

Rushed judgments based on isolated events aren’t advisable. Both governments will implement measures to address the situation. Caution is warranted, but panic should be avoided. Students should stay updated and exercise patience as the situation unfolds, ensuring they make informed decisions regarding their education in Canada.

Rohit Sethi, Director – ESS Global – A study abroad consultant

As the Director of ESS Global, a leading study abroad consultancy firm, I am deeply concerned about the impact of soured Indo-Canadian relations on Indian students and aspiring residents. Education knows no borders, and it has always been our mission to help students achieve their dreams of studying abroad.

We hope that diplomatic efforts between India and Canada can resolve any issues, ensuring that students continue to have access to quality education and opportunities in Canada. Together, we can build bridges of understanding and cooperation that benefit not only individuals but also strengthen the ties between our two great nations.

Abhijit Zaveri, Founder and director of Career Mosaic, says, “It is essential to remember that both nations share a longstanding and robust relationship as India is one of the top five sources of migrants to Canada. Diplomatic issues arise from time to time, and it is not uncommon for such matters to be resolved through dialogue and cooperation.

For students planning to study in Canada, it is prudent to stay informed about the ongoing developments through reliable sources only. While the temporary suspension of visa services may present challenges, it is crucial to maintain flexibility and consider alternative plans if necessary. For those students already in Canada, we understand that these circumstances may be concerning. However, it’s important to stay calm and continue to focus on their academic journey.”
