Indian visa applications surge despite US and Schengen challenges

Indians are demonstrating an unprecedented surge in visa applications, set to surpass the levels seen in 2019. In 2022, visa application volumes surged by over 140% compared to 2021, although they were about 30% less than the levels observed in 2019.

Indian visa applications surge despite US and Schengen challenges

Despite challenging circumstances posed by extended interview wait times and appointment count restrictions in popular destinations like the US and Schengen states, Indians are demonstrating an unprecedented surge in visa applications, set to surpass the levels seen in 2019, a record year for visa lodgements.

Record-Breaking Application Numbers
In a surprising turn of events, visa applications filed in India this year are on track to exceed the pre-pandemic levels witnessed in 2019. VFS Global, the entity responsible for managing visa applications for over 50 countries, has processed well over 30 lakh visa applications in India from January to June 2023, as compared to the 60 lakh applications received throughout 2019. This surge is remarkable considering the obstacles posed by prolonged interview wait times and appointment restrictions in key destinations.

Robust Rebound Despite Challenges
Travel industry veterans believe that the numbers could have been even higher if not for the processing limitations imposed by the US and Schengen States. Despite facing a 1.5-year-long interview wait period for US B1 (business) and B2 (visitor) visa applicants, and appointment count capping in most Schengen countries, Indians are exhibiting a strong desire to travel internationally.

Bottlenecks in Major Destinations
The major hurdles include lengthy interview wait periods for US visa applicants and appointment count restrictions in Schengen countries, allowing only about half of the aspiring Indian travellers to secure an appointment. Notably, international airfares have remained high even after the global reopening in 2021-22, making return fares almost equivalent to one-way prices, presenting an additional challenge for travellers.

Rejuvenated Demand for International Travel
Despite the constraints, there has been a remarkable resurgence in the demand for international travel from India post-pandemic. In 2022, visa application volumes surged by over 140% compared to 2021, although they were about 30% less than the levels observed in 2019. VFS Global anticipates surpassing pre-pandemic momentum in visa applications by the end of this year, driven by the sustained pent-up demand.

Shifting Travel Preferences
Acknowledging the significant demand, VFS Global noted that destinations offering e-visas, such as UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, and Azerbaijan, have witnessed a surge in travellers. Interestingly, the traditional peak travel season has extended into September, historically a lean travel month in India, showcasing the evolving travel patterns and preferences among Indians.

Strengthening Global Contracts
In response to the heightened demand, VFS Global has recently secured major global contracts for visa processing with Sweden and Australia. The partnerships reaffirm the travel industry’s confidence in early travel rebound from India and reflect the positive trajectory of outbound travel.

The consistent rise in visa applications signifies a promising revival in the travel sector, highlighting the resilient spirit of Indian travellers.
