Many international students in Canada whose work permits are expiring are requesting an 18-month extension of their permits.
About 3,000 international students in Canada signed a document calling on the Federal Minister of Immigration to make this change, as work permits for international students expire after graduation this year.
Extension of work permits for international students in Canada in this case
It is worth noting that the federal government in Canada extended work permits after graduation if they had expired during the previous three years due to the pandemic.
According to Vivian Albuquerque, a Canadian and US immigration lawyer, employment permits will not be extended after graduation. “This was the original policy in place prior to the pandemic, but economic and social circumstances have changed.”
Setting a cap on the number of international students in Canada
Federal Immigration Minister Mark Miller recently stated that he will propose capping the number of overseas students in Canada within the next several months.
Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada stated that it is assessing the program to see how we can help international students in Canada.
It will continue to collaborate closely with provinces, territories, educational institutions, and other important stakeholders to address the persisting issues that international students confront.
Double the financial requirements for the cost of living for international students
IRCC also made adjustments that went into effect on January 1. One of these modifications is the need that new international students prove they have savings of $20,635, in addition to covering the first year of tuition and travel expenses.
Students who come to Canada without the funds to support themselves are the primary target of this policy. The letter warned that international students should know what to expect financially from Canada before they come.
Additional open work permit for international students
Concerning requests for extensions of work permits, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) states that during the height of the epidemic, measures were implemented that permitted individuals with expired post-graduation work permits to apply for an additional open work permit for up to 18 months.
The previous students were given the chance to obtain the work experience needed to seek for permanent residency following the disruption of their job due to closures caused by the epidemic, according to IRCC’s statement.
