New Zealand Visa Rejection Rates for Indians Rise to 28% in 2024

Visa Rejection

Indian nationals looking to travel to New Zealand are facing growing challenges in securing visitor visas. In 2024, the visa rejection rate for Indian applicants surged to 28%, one of the highest among major visitor groups, reflecting a significant hurdle for many travelers.

Rising Visa Rejection Rates

Between January 2023 and September 2024, New Zealand processed over 134,000 visa applications from Indian nationals. However, 28% of these applications were denied, marking a steep increase compared to previous years.

This is the second-highest rejection rate for any nationality applying to New Zealand, trailing only behind Pakistan, which saw a rejection rate of 71%.

Factors Contributing to Rejections

Several factors are believed to be behind the rising visa rejection rates for Indian nationals:

1. Incomplete Documentation: Many applications were rejected due to incomplete or inaccurate paperwork.

2. Immigration Requirements: Failing to meet New Zealand’s immigration standards, such as proving sufficient funds or genuine intentions to return, contributed to the high rejection rate.

3. Increased Scrutiny: New Zealand authorities are placing greater scrutiny on visitor visa applications post-pandemic, leading to more rejections.

Visa Approval Trends

Despite the challenges, a large number of Indian nationals are still successfully obtaining visas to New Zealand. From January to August 2024, nearly 98,000 visitor visa applications from India were approved, reflecting a growing interest in the country as a top travel destination.

Why New Zealand Remains Popular Among Indian Travelers

New Zealand continues to attract Indian tourists due to its natural beauty, adventure activities, and welcoming culture. The country’s post-Covid reopening has also spurred increased travel interest.

However, the growing middle class in India and a greater appetite for international travel have driven a surge in visa applications, leading to stricter vetting processes.

Expert Advice for Applicants

Experts advise Indian travelers to ensure their applications are thoroughly prepared to avoid rejection. According to Jock Gilray, director of visas at Immigration New Zealand, applicants must demonstrate genuine reasons for visiting and clear evidence of ties to their home country.

“Well-prepared applications have a higher approval rate,” said Gilray. “Applicants should meet all immigration requirements and provide comprehensive documentation to support their case.”

Conclusion

While New Zealand remains a favored destination for Indian nationals, the rising visa rejection rate highlights the importance of careful preparation and understanding the visa process.

As rejection rates climb, Indian travelers must ensure their applications are complete, accurate, and in line with New Zealand’s immigration guidelines to improve their chances of approval.
